Recently I’ve been concentrating on using negative space to tell a story or capture an emotion. I had the opportunity to travel to the Florida panhandle, and used my time there to push the boundaries of my current style. Practicing patience while out on a shoot has really been key-- first finding the negative space that interests me, then allowing subjects to enter it naturally. This method has produced some fascinating shots which play with the relationship between negative and positive space. Many of the photos that I took using this method display bright colors that lead the eye around the photograph or focus on a subject within the photograph. To do this I blended the method I was using with a technique I’ve used before-- utilizing bright exposure to make colors pop. This experience has reinforced that by observing my surroundings, I could present a story told through colors, the subject and negative space.
